Meta is developing an AI search engine—could this be the genuine competitor to Google we’ve been anticipating?

Meta is working on an AI search engine aimed at competing with Google and Microsoft, allowing its AI chatbot to provide answers without needing external sources.

According to The Information, “Meta aims to reduce its dependency on Google Search and Microsoft’s Bing, which currently supply information on news, sports, and stocks to Meta AI users, as revealed by someone familiar with the search engine team.”

This initiative follows Meta AI’s recent collaboration with Reuters, enabling users to access the latest news and current events directly through Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp.

Meta’s goal is to make Meta AI self-sufficient, eliminating the need for external technologies to enhance user experience. Creating an AI-driven search engine would be a significant advancement toward that aim.

The Information also notes that Meta’s representative chose not to comment, but with over 185 million weekly users of Meta AI, it’s likely the company will invest more in its technology to retain this search traffic internally.

A New Era of AI Search

AI search engines are gaining traction, with platforms like Perplexity and Arc Search proving to be highly effective for web searches. Unlike traditional Google searches, AI search engines summarize results and provide links to original sources for further investigation.

Should Meta successfully create its AI search engine, it could emerge as a serious competitor to Google’s search capabilities as major companies explore the AI search engine market. OpenAI’s SearchGPT is expected to launch by the end of the year, raising the possibility that Meta’s version could debut before 2025.
