TikTok Says I Have a Double Lip Line—Here’s What Makeup Artists Revealed

I sensed that bold lipstick trends would soon emerge—just take a look at the Cherry Cola lip trend—and the latest buzz on TikTok confirms it. This trend focuses on identifying whether you naturally have a double lip line, or how to create one using lip liner to give your lips a fuller appearance. Whether inherent or artificially created, this look is celebrated for defining your lips and enhancing lipstick longevity. Skeptical at first, I consulted three makeup experts to gain more insight into this trend and how to achieve it.

Meet the Experts

Nydia Figueroa is a celebrity makeup artist with over 15 years in the industry. Starting with MAC Cosmetics, she has made a name for herself through her work at events like New York Fashion Week and the Miss Universe pageant.

Tamara Boyd, a professional makeup artist and brand ambassador for Black Radiance, has over a decade of experience in Los Angeles, focusing on bridal and special occasion makeup with an emphasis on flawless results.

Tisha Thompson, with more than 20 years in the field, is a makeup artist and founder of LYS Beauty. Previously a makeup artist at MAC and a marketing VP for PÜR, she launched LYS Beauty in 2021 to challenge the misconceptions surrounding clean beauty and affordable, inclusive shade ranges.

What Exactly Is a Double Lip Line?

“A double lip line is characterized by two distinct contours of the lips: an outer line that slightly protrudes and defines the edge, and an inner line that shapes the lip,” explains Thompson. Also known as the vermillion border, this feature can be genetic and is often more visible in medium to dark skin tones. Boyd notes, “Many people have a double lip line, influenced by factors such as aging and sun exposure, which can enhance its prominence over time.” Celebrities like Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Gigi Hadid, and Viola Davis are known for their natural double lip lines.

Why Is This Trend Gaining Popularity?

The trend started gaining traction in 2022, with creators like Sarah’s Super Spa teaching followers how to apply lipstick on a double lip line. Black fashion journalist and creator Śola went viral for her videos demonstrating how to embrace a natural double lip line. She shared, “As a Black woman with full lips, I struggled with lip liner until I learned about the vermillion border.”

According to Thompson, double lip lines can create a fuller lip appearance and have long been favored by makeup artists. “Double-lined lips naturally appear plumper, as the outer line acts like a built-in lip liner, adding depth and casting a shadow along the edges,” she explains.

How Can You Tell If You Have One?

Figueroa suggests examining your lips in good lighting to check for a raised line around them. “Move your face to reveal different contour lines; this will help identify the natural outer edge,” she advises.

Alternatively, take a photo with your lips relaxed. Boyd recommends zooming in to see if there’s a line separating your lips from the surrounding skin, ensuring it’s symmetrical for a well-defined shape. After closely inspecting my lips, I discovered a darker line—what a revelation!

Creating a Double Lip Line

For those without a natural double lip line, there’s a simple technique to achieve the look:

  1. Choose a darker liner: Pick a liner that’s two shades darker than your natural lip color. “A deeper shade subtly enhances the double lip line,” Figueroa suggests. Start by lining the highest point of your lip and blend it gently.
  2. Add a second liner: Use a shade closest to your natural lip color, lining slightly above the first line and blending carefully to maintain the distinction. “Focus on defining the cupid’s bow and outer corners,” Boyd adds.
  3. Apply lipstick: Use your favorite lipstick below the lines, selecting a shade that complements the second liner. You can finish with a gloss or tinted lip balm for extra shine.

How to Apply Lipstick With a Natural Double Lip Line

Figueroa advises using a lip liner to determine whether to line outside the vermillion border for a fuller look, or within it for a more natural effect. She suggests a technique called “Lip Pillowing,” which involves using a small brush to apply lip color for an airbrushed finish. For a bolder look, a synthetic lip brush can be used.

Tips to Prevent Smudging or Misalignment

To ensure your lips look perfect after applying the steps above, follow these expert tips:

  • Prep your lips: Use a lip primer or translucent setting powder after applying lipstick, Figueroa recommends.
  • Choose long-lasting lipstick: Opt for formulas with good staying power and minimal slip.
  • Blot your lips: After applying lipstick, use a tissue to prevent smudging. Boyd also suggests using a cotton swab with makeup remover to clean the edges for a sharper look.
  • Utilize concealer: Applying a concealer that matches your skin tone can help define the area around your lips after lining.
